Gnats

Gnat Control in MN

Fungus gnats are small flies that infest soil, potting mix, and other sources of organic decomposition. Fungus gnat larvae feed on fungi and organic matter in the soil as well as plant roots.

Adult fungus gnats emerge from the soil and can become a nuisance.

Inspection

A thorough inspection should be made to determine the source of infestation. Outdoors check landscaping, mulched areas, frequently watered areas, low lying areas and near leaky hose spigots and ponds. Indoors potted plants are typically to blame.

Check areas of the home such as bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, crawl spaces, floor drains and other areas that may have moisture issues.

Treatment

Infestations sources must be located and issues corrected for proper fungus gnat control. House plants should be allowed to dry between watering’s. The use of yellow sticky traps placed in potted plants catches adults.

This can aid in treatments and early detection of infestations. Correct all leaky pipes and other moisture problems in and around home. Treatments can be made with liquid insecticides and aerosols for fast knockdown of fungus gnats. Soil treatments such as pot drenches can also be effective.

Prevention

Avoid over-watering indoor potted plants. Use sticky traps placed into potted plants and check them often. Correct other moisture problems in and around the home. Outside remove piles of grass clippings and leaves and keep mulch piles away from home.
